The Bill and Dan Ebert clans united for a mother's day picnic along the Tampa Bay. Bill, Darla, April, and Billy are on the back row (they are missing Benjamin (work) Teri and Steve,Illinois). The rest are my clan with the two new borns (we are missing James and LeighAnn, Kentucky).

Rethinking the Synoptic Problem

I am reading the book by Black and Beck, interesting, they present both the Two Gospel hypothesis and the two-source hypothesis (Oxford hypothesis). It is interesting, but pro-Markian, which most are. But for some strange reason I feel more comfortable with the pre-Matthian view.

But what I wanted to share was the last two sentences in a chapter by Scot McKnight titled "A Generation who knew not Streeter" "Griesbach and Oxford proponents differ substantially; and the differences are enormous in implication. But they are united in this: the problem is worthy of study, and it makes a difference for interpretation, for history, for theology, and for pastoral theology. My question is does it? I can see the history, but the other three I have never come across. Any comment or examples where the synoptic problem affects the interpretation, theology, or pastoral theology?

Trinitarian Interpretation

Dan, Congratulations to you and Sue on the birth of your latest grand baby.

I would like you to help me (us) understand your approach to interpretation from a trinitarian perspective. Since my students will make reference to your model I need to be better informed about it.

So, tell us the approach and perhaps we could work on applying it to some select Old and New Testament passages.

Community Shaping Documents

Richard Hays speaks of Paul's writings as "community forming documents"...I reread Colossians 1:3-14 in that light. Early in the prayer Paul mentions "the love you have for all the saints" and towards the end he speaks of "you...share in the inhertance of the saints." And, of course, all the second person pronouns throughout are plural. Are we really faithful to this emphasis in our ministries and work? I know that it is the Spirit and the Word which around the living Christ create true community..., but how do we work that out in our labors? Just my thoughts this morning.

Jack, thanks for hosting Bill and I. Our conversations were an encouragment to us. The idea of extending our discussions on a blog made sense. How do you like the blog name? I thought it was better than "pairadocs".....since the community has already grown beyond two.
